It seems that authorities in my country are making an effort to make people laughing at them, perhaps to turn the crisis-scam more bearable. Past week I wrote about a catholic priest publishing a laughable questionnaire for his parishioners (Do you partake in pagan sacrifices?). Just a few days after I wrote that post, the Interior Minister awarded the Gold Medal of Police Merit to the Virgin (Virgin Mary awarded top police medal).
Yes, you have read right, the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ.
The Interior Minister Jorge Fernández Díaz hasn’t specified the exact reasons that make the Virgin worthy of the highest Police award, but he has written in the order that she works in close collaboration with the Police. I insist. he isn’t a humourist, is the Interior Minister.
However, the law is clear, and specify the merits to receive this medal: being killed or injured in the line of duty, direct or perform some service of primary importance to the police force, to have an exemplary or extraordinary performance, being outlined by his/her value, ability or eficacy in fulfilling important services, or to perform similar acts involving extraordinary merits.
Until the moment, the Virgin hasn’t been seen in any public police operation -evictions, beating to protesters, killing of inmigrants, etc-, it isn’t known any service that she has directed or performed, with extraordinary value or without it. It’s possible that she has performed secret services though, or she does it being disguised (contemporary clothes, conservative though, and her crown hidden in a handbag).
I hope the Minister will make it clear, because a lot of people is asking for explanations. However, he remains silent. I’m sorry, Jorge, but it’s too late to apply the old advice: “Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt”. At this point, there is not doubt already.
Anyway, a spokesperson has explained that the prize in money that usually is given with the medal, hasn’t been given this time. Good to know. Again, I insist: they aren’t humourists, this isn’t a joke, is real.
Well, some people have thought there are other characters worthy of this award. There is a campaign requesting the Gold Medal of Police Merit for Mortadelo and Filemón. They are famous in Spain, but not in the rest of the world, I guess; so, here they are; Mortadelo at the left side, with glasses, Filemón is the other one:

Mortadelo and Filemón (Mort & Phil) are a pair of secret agents in one of the most popular comic series, published since 1958, and also in other countries. They livened up my childhood and were much more important for my life than that supposed virgin, so I’ve signed the request. And whoever can do it in this link.
When I publish this post, there are 17.500 signatures. Please, collaborate and sign the request! Sign and share! Mortadelo and Filemón are worthy of the Gold Medal of Police Merit!
P.S. I know I’m disrepectful and that can offend some people. But it’s a common effect when someone tries to impose something, people can bounce back. It is supposed this is a secular country, and we haven’t to put up with fundamentalist ministers who impose their religious beliefs exceeding the limit of absurdity. There are religious people who don’t make a fool of themselves, try to look like those, Georgie boy.
