Litha

Litha, Midsummer or Summer Solstice is here at last. It is celebrated in many places at Europe, between June 21 and 25. Where I live, it’s celebrated the night of June 23, tonight, and it’s named Noche de San Juan (=Night of St. John).

Once more, as they have done so many times, Christian Church tried to turn a pagan celebration in a christian one. But they haven’t got to change the celebrations, that continue being around bonfires and with a non religious sense. What it’s celebrated is nothing about that guy, John, but the summer solstice, obviously. The sun reaches its zenith in the sky, and June 21 it’s the longest day of the year for the northern hemisphere (December 21-22 for the southern hemisphere).
